Trait
Thermal Atomization
While at high heat, this weapon deals increased damage and causes targets to explode when defeated.
Overview
Thermal Atomization is a basic Trait perk introduced in Season 28. While the weapon is at high heat, it deals increased damage and causes targets to explode when defeated. The perk synergizes with weapons featuring heat mechanics, rewarding players who sustain fire and build up the heat meter.
How It Works
The perk activates only while the weapon maintains high heat status. Weapons with intrinsic heat mechanics (such as Voltaic Shade with its Balanced Heat Weapon frame) generate heat through sustained fire. At maximum or near-maximum heat, shots deal increased damage and apply an explosion effect to defeated enemies, creating both offensive burst damage and crowd control on kills.
The explosion damage scales with the weapon's power level and element type. This makes it particularly valuable in content with grouped enemies where explosions can chain kills, and less relevant against isolated targets.
Weapons with Thermal Atomization
Thermal Atomization rolls on several Season 28 and newer weapons:
- Voltaic Shade (Submachine Gun) — Primary user, benefits heavily from heat synergy
- All or Nothing (Pulse Rifle)
- Bitter End (Glaive)
- High Tyrant (Bow)
- Zealous Ideal (Linear Fusion Rifle)
- Compact Defender (Shotgun)
- M-17 "Fast Talker" (Sidearm)
- Modified B-7 Pistol (Handcannon)
- Uncivil Discourse (Fusion Rifle)
- Vikala SMG4 (Submachine Gun)
- Conspiracy Honed (Sword)
When to Use
Thermal Atomization shines in activities with dense enemy groups such as Strikes, Gambit, and lower-tier Nightfalls. On Voltaic Shade specifically, maintaining high heat ensures both the perk's damage boost and the weapon's intrinsic heat benefits stack for maximum output. In PvP, the explosion can finish weakened opponents or create space during engagements, though the heat requirement makes it less consistent than on-demand perks.
It pairs well with perks that reward sustained fire or encourage staying at range, as heat builds steadily with continuous shooting. In Dungeons and harder Nightfalls, the crowd control aspect of explosions can prevent enemy pileups.
History
Thermal Atomization debuted in Season 28 as part of a new wave of heat-focused perks aligned with seasonal weapon mechanics. It has appeared consistently on new weapon drops designed to synergize with the heat system.
