The Theodicy War was a conflict between two Awoken factions in the Distributary, the world the Awoken settled after the Collapse.

Factions

The Eccaleists believed the Awoken owed a debt to the cosmos and had to resolve the primordial conflict that created them. They were led by the preacher Diasyrm. The Sanguine, city-dwelling Awoken, held that they owed nothing to the universe beyond staying in the Distributary, and they backed Queen Alis Li.

Conflict

The Eccaleists accused Alis Li of deicide. After a Paladin was killed by a Maltech weapon, Alis Li sought peace and enlisted Osana Sov. Osana and Uldren Sov offered the Diasyrm a secret from Mara Sov in exchange for an end to the killing. Uldren then spread rumors among the Diasyrm's warriors, and the Eccaleists scattered.

Aftermath

Alis Li later abdicated out of guilt, and Nguya Pin became queen. The collective guilt led to a mass exodus from the Distributary.

Trivia

Mara Sov secretly engineered the war so the Awoken would feel guilty and leave the Distributary to join the cosmic war between Light and Darkness.
