History of Placement Series

The Placement Series is the run of placement matches in Competitive Crucible that a player plays before receiving a starting Division. Bungie's Shacknews coverage describes these matches as the way players "find their starting point" before they receive a rank.

The placement results are used to find the starting Division. Once placed, wins and performance determine movement between subdivisions and Divisions. The number of matches and any cap on the starting Division are not confirmed by the sources listed here.
