Mods add stats or minor gameplay elements when they're equipped to an active piece of gear.
Each armor piece has sockets for general mods, like stat boosts, as well as slot-specific sockets and combat style mods.

Overview
Modify Armor is a Triumph in Destiny 2 that asks you to equip slot-specific Armor mods on your armor. Each armor piece has a general mod socket for stat boosts, along with separate slot-specific sockets and a combat style socket. The triumph tracks four objectives, one for each of the head, arms, chest and legs mod sockets.
How to complete
Equip a slot-specific mod in the matching socket on each of the four armor slots: head, arms, chest and legs. A slot-specific mod only fits the designated slot on its armor piece, so a helmet mod cannot go in a chest socket. Every mod draws from the armor piece's energy capacity, so it can only be installed if the piece has enough free charge. Masterwork can raise that capacity, and Ada-1 and most vendors' rank-up packages are common places to get mods.
