History of In the Face of Darkness

Overview

In the Face of Darkness is a Season of Arrivals quest given by the Drifter in the Annex of the Tower. It runs alongside the Prismatic Recaster and the Umbral Engram mechanic, and the quest's steps take roughly one playlist session plus a few trips back to the Tower.

Walkthrough

1. Speak with the Drifter in the Annex of the Tower to start the quest.
2. Take the Seed of Silver Wings to an Io or Titan invasion site and complete the Contact public event. You only need to complete the event, not win it.
3. Bring the Umbral Engram you receive to the Drifter so he can examine it.
4. Decrypt the Umbral Engram at the Umbral Decoder in the Annex, next to the Drifter.
5. Return to the Drifter.
6. Complete a Strike, Crucible or Gambit match.
7. Return to the Drifter.
8. Bring Twisted Energy to the Prismatic Recaster to rank it up.
9. Activate the available Gift, Umbral Enhancement I.
10. Find an Umbral Engram and focus it at the Recaster's Umbral Focusing subscreen.
11. Decrypt the focused Umbral Engram.
12. Return to the Drifter.
13. Claim the weekly "Means to an End" quest from the Prismatic Recaster.

Trivia

Some guides report that decryption at the Umbral Decoder occasionally fails to register; talking to the Drifter again or walking back to the machine has been suggested as a workaround.
