History of Essence of the Oversoul

Essence of the Oversoul is a material from the Crota's End raid. It is used for the Bottomless Pit quest and the Necrochasm exotic catalyst.

Acquisition

• Weekly raid drops: Since Update 7.2.0.4 (live 21 September 2023), a full weekly clear of Crota's End guarantees two Essence: one for completing the raid and one for defeating Crota. Each further full clear that week adds one more. Before that change, one Essence per account per week was guaranteed.
• Encounter drops: Each encounter has a small chance to drop Essence. Farming a single encounter such as Ir Yut is slow because the drop is rare.
• Triumphs: Several Crota's End triumphs award fixed amounts. For example, Perfected Truth, which completes the raid without dying or leaving, is cited as giving three Essence. Sources differ on the exact amounts, so check the raid's triumph screen.

Uses

The Bottomless Pit quest step for Necrochasm asks for 15 Essence after the Eidolon ally is obtained. A 2023 report says a 35-Essence lottery reward covers both the Necrochasm quest and its catalyst. Sources differ on these totals, so confirm current numbers in-game.
