History of Engram

Overview

Engrams are dodecahedron-shaped crystals of encoded matter, patterns for weapons, armor and gear. A Cryptarch such as Master Rahool in The Tower decrypts them into items.

Types

The basic engram tiers colour-code item rarity: Encoded (common), Encrypted (uncommon), Decoherent (rare), Legendary and Exotic. Destiny 2 added variants such as Umbral Engrams, Bright Engrams, Deep Engrams and destination engrams. Higher-tier engrams give better odds of high-rarity loot.
