History of Universal Ornament

Universal Ornaments change the look of a piece of armor without changing its stats or mods (a "transmog" system). They arrived with Season of the Splicer as Armor Synthesis: Ada-1's Loom turns Synthcord into Synthweave, which unlocks any non-Exotic armor piece as an ornament usable on other armor of the same class. Synthweave types are Strap (Hunter), Bolt (Warlock), and Plate (Titan). Exotic armor cannot be used as or with them.

Synthweave was capped at ten per character per season through free methods (eleven in Splicer), while Eververse sold more. The Synthstrand, Synthcord and Synthweave chain was widely criticized as convoluted (TheGamer). Later Eververse and event sets, such as the Veteran Legend armor, also come with universal ornaments.

Note: the original assignment described these as Shadowkeep-era; the sources show the system dates to Season of the Splicer, after Shadowkeep.
