History of The Crucible

The Crucible is Destiny 2's player-versus-player mode, run by Lord Shaxx.
Overview
Guardians queue through matchmaking into playlists. Permanent modes include Control (6v6 zone capture), Clash (6v6 team deathmatch), Rumble (free-for-all), Survival (3v3 limited lives) and Elimination (3v3 one-life rounds with revives). Weekly rotators include Mayhem, Momentum Control, Rift, Supremacy, Team Scorched and Relic. Experimental modes appear in Crucible Labs. Destinypedia notes that level advantages are disabled across playlists, so the mode emphasises skill over gear.
Special events
- Iron Banner: roughly monthly 6v6 event with rotating game types.
- Trials of Osiris: elite 3v3 Elimination weekend event awarding Adept weapons.
Launching
Select the Crucible from the Director in older versions, or from The Portal since The Edge of Fate, where it is one of the four playlists (3v3 or 6v6, roughly 5 to 15 minutes). TheGamer notes Portal Crucible completions award PvP gear and, like other playlists, always raise Power.
Rewards
Matches grant gear and automatic reputation with Lord Shaxx, who sells weapons, armor and cosmetics and focuses engrams. Token-based reputation was phased out starting Season 12 (per Destinypedia). Destinypedia also lists Pinnacle-style rewards such as Luna's Howl and The Recluse alongside Iron Banner and Trials gear.
History
The Crucible exists in both Destiny games. Wikipedia says Destiny 2 balances player statistics such as weapon power and defense between players; Destinypedia says Destiny 2 launched with 4v4 teams and later moved quickplay and Iron Banner to 6v6. Wikipedia also says Destiny 2 initially replaced Trials of Osiris with Trials of the Nine. Sources are dated, so treat mode lists as a snapshot and check in game.
