History of New Malpais Catalyst

Overview

The New Malpais Catalyst is a Triumph in Destiny 2 for the New Malpais exotic pulse rifle. It requires 700 target defeats with the weapon. Multiple final blows against combatants give bonus progress toward that total.

New Malpais is a Season 27 exotic Pulse Rifle in the Kinetic slot that deals Strand damage.

Catalyst

The catalyst is called Unraveling Blast. It grants the Unraveling Blast perk: final blows and detonations of embedded rounds make targets explode, damaging and unraveling nearby enemies. Unraveled enemies release Threadling projectiles when damaged further, which can chain into area damage against groups.

The catalyst was a Reward Pass reward at Rank 90 on either track during Ash and Iron. That route has since closed, and the catalyst now drops at random from Strikes, Crucible and Gambit matches, and from patrol enemies. The source describing this was last updated in November 2025, so check the current drop sources before farming.

How to complete

Equip New Malpais and defeat 700 targets with it. Group fights suit the chain effect, and multiple final blows speed up progress.
