History of Illuminated Torment

Overview

Illuminated Torment is a Triumph in Destiny 2 earned by completing the Illuminated Torment challenge in the Root of Nightmares raid. Completing it awards 10 Triumph score.

The challenge is in the first encounter of the raid, the Cataclysm fight, and was a weekly challenge when these guides were written in 2023.

How to complete

The challenge is about who kills the Tormentor. The Tormentor must be killed by a player holding the Field of Light buff. Damage from other players is fine, but if someone without the buff lands the killing blow the challenge fails.

1. Play the encounter normally, but do not kill the Tormentor.
2. When the Tormentor drops to about 15% health, everyone stops shooting it.
3. One player goes to the runner to pick up the Field of Light buff.
4. That player returns to the Tormentor and lands the killing blow.

To make this easier, use two runners. Give the off-runner the job of slaying the Tormentor, and swap the roles on each plate. The buff only lasts a short time, so have the buffed player ready before the Tormentor is brought down.

Burst weapons such as rockets, sniper rifles or linear fusion rifles are the usual choice for finishing the Tormentor quickly. Calling out each runner's buff and timing the kill is the main thing that decides the attempt.
