History of High-Value Target

Overview

A High-Value Target (HVT) is a roaming Major enemy found in open-world destinations. When a Guardian is near one, on-screen text announces that a high-value target is nearby. There is no sky change or Ghost announcement. Killing it triggers a separate message that it has dropped its plunder.

Locations

  • European Dead Zone: Trostland, The Sludge, Winding Cove, The Gulch, Sunken Isles
  • Titan: Siren's Watch, The Rig
  • Nessus: Watcher's Grave, The Cistern, Hallows, Glade of Echoes, Exodus Black
  • Io: Lost Oasis, The Rupture, Giant's Scar

Enemies

HVTs use Fallen (Despoiler Captain, Ransack Servitor, Ransack Vandal), Hive (Fissure Knight), Vex (Storm Minotaur, Storm Hydra), Taken (Blighted Centurion) and Cabal (Impact Centurion) types, depending on the location. The sources disagree on whether a Despoiler Captain counts as an HVT; the d2 wiki says it does not, while a 2019 Shacknews guide lists it as one.

Rewards

The d2 wiki says defeating an HVT rewards a Boss Chest. A 2019 Shacknews guide says killing one can complete a bounty, progress a quest or upgrade a piece of gear.

Notes

Lost Sector bosses, Public Event enemies, Blind Well opponents and the roaming enemies hunted for Spider bounties do not spawn HVTs, per the 2019 Shacknews guide. The d2 wiki classes HVTs as a Secret Public Event, which the 2019 guide does not.
