Overview

Echoes are paracausal artifacts that came out of the Traveler after the Witness was defeated in The Final Shape. Each Echo holds the memories of a civilization the Witness conquered during its crusade against the Traveler, and they can change the nature of whatever they are used on. They are the central power of Episode: Revenant, and they are not to be confused with Episode: Echoes, the later episode that followed.

Echo of Riis

Echo of Riis is an Echo that can alter an Eliksni's Ether. It appears as a three-pronged spearpoint glowing with Prismatic energy, and it communicates through song. Variks traced the song to Riis, the Eliksni homeworld, in the days of the Whirlwind.

Episode: Revenant

Fikrul took the Echo of Riis and fused it into his staff, which let him change the polarity of Ether in living Eliksni. He used this to turn them into Revenant Scorn, and he declared himself Kell of Kells during the H.E.L.M. incident. He was stopped at the Revenant Fortress in the episode's final act: the Guardian wounded him with the Tonic of Ether Clarification, which made him mortal, and he died for good. Eramis was later able to use the Echo of Riis to purge Nezarec's curse from Mithrax, and the Echo then chose her and was taken back to Riis.
